What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very gentle treatment that improves the lymphatic system throughout the body. In the 1930’s the technique of MLD was first introduced by Dr. Emil Vodder, Ph.D., MT, from Denmark. MLD is becoming widely recognized in the United States as a treatment for many pathologies including Post Surgical Swelling, post traumatic edema (e.g. sports injuries, migraines, headaches, rheumatic arthritis and fibromyalgia). MLD is further used to promote general relaxation and for cleansing (detoxification) of the skin and superficial fascia.

How Can MLD Help Me?

The lymphatic system plays a vital role in the healthy functioning of the body. One of the major roles of the lymphatic system is to drain excess fluid from around tissues and organs and return it to the blood maintaining the body’s fluid balance: when this function goes out of balance then edema (swelling) results. By returning lymph to the blood stream, the lymph vascular system helps to maintain normal blood pressure and volume. The lymphatic system is also a vital component of the immune system as lymph nodes wash the lymph (excess fluids sucked up from body’s interstitial tissue spaces) trapping and destroying as many foreign bodies as possible inside their capsular structure. This is what occurs when people refer to swollen glands. MLD is effective in treating and helping with a wide range of problems including:

  • Pre and post surgery
  • Edema
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Skin disorders
  • Digestive disorders
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Sinus congestion
  • Stress
  • Arthritis – osteo and rheumatoid
  • Sprains
  • Cellulite
  • Natural detox programs
  • Insomnia
  • Chronic pain

Benefits of an MLD session?

Western cultures diet of not enough clean fluid intake, coupled with highly processed foods can introduce excess waste into the lymphatic system creating sluggish over stressed lymphatic systems. This results in a self perpetuating cycle of more waste products produced with the body and less energy. For the reason any person can benefit from lymph drainage as a part of a general detox well being program; as well as benefiting of MLD in terms of treating conditions listed:

  • Enhances the activity of the immune system
  • Helps reduce pain in joints and muscles; increasing mobility
  • Helps improve energy levels
  • Supports natural detox programs
  • Promotes deep relaxation
  • Increases cellular oxygenation and nourishment

What happens during a session?

At the first session a written consultation is undertaken in a friendly environment, this takes about 40 minutes. I will ask you a series of questions around lifestyle, diet and your health/medical history to allow me to tailor your treatment more specifically in order to get the best results for you. It is also a chance for you to tell me about any specific areas of your body with which there are issues. You will be asked to remove appropriate clothing in private and make yourself comfortable on the massage table, with large warm towels to cover you, to be ready for your treatment. During this massage, only the part of your body being massaged will be exposed in order to protect. your modesty.

Dry Skin Brushing

The skin plays a vital role in ridding the body of toxins and impurities and to stimulate, and detoxify the lymphatic system. The skin is the largest organ of the body, and is responsible for one-fourth of the body’s detoxification each day.
